The History of Stained Glass

In the 1st Century A.D., the Romans glazed glass into windows. The cast slabs and utilized blowing techniques, to spin discs and cylinder glass. The glass was irregular and not very transparent.

One of the oldest known examples of multiple pieces of COLORED glass used in a window, was unearthed at St. Paul’s Monastery in Jarrow, England in 686 A.D.

The first known remains of stained glass found in Churches were in the Romanesque style in approximately 1120 A.D. in the Le Mans Cathedral and soon after, in many other Cathedrals in the immediate years following.

There are many styles of stained glass that have evolved over the centuries and have effected today’s developed styles:

• Romanesque
• Gothic
• Renaissance

The popularity of the art of stained glass, came back in the 19th Century and continues until today. What is more important, is that right now artists are beginning to become fully aware of expressional possibilities of stained glass. Stained Glass is becoming what is was in the times of it’s magnificence – the miracle of light entering the soul directly.
